Luxury pillows from the House of Dumas

Maison Dumas is the story of a family that has been working for 5 generations to preserve a unique expertise in small bedding items. Founded in 1910, the company has been run by five generations of craftsmen. Thanks to the excellence of its craftsmen and their unique skills, Dumas Paris supplies some of the world's finest hotels. The workshops, which have been awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label, produce pillows with the precision of exceptional craftsmanship, combined with innovative techniques. The precious filling is blown into refined fabric envelopes, sewn directly in the workshops. This century-old craft takes the time to apply unique manual gestures to guarantee exceptional quality. Each luxury pillow made by Maison Dumas is individually inspected and packaged.

A committed company

For Maison Dumas, the priority is for pillow production to be responsible and sustainable. The brand has opted to recycle its manufacturing waste and reduce the CO2 emissions associated with pillow production. These emissions are measured during bi-annual carbon audits. Part of the profits generated by production also fund carbon sequestration projects that contribute to global carbon neutrality. These consist of forest plantations in Bourgogne Franche-Comté, in which Maison Dumas employees participate.

What is a top-of-the-range bolster?

With its tubular shape, this accessory slips under the pillow when it's flat, or even replaces it. It's a bedding accessory that adds to the comfort of bedtime. Originally from France, it was stuffed with duck feathers and its original purpose was to raise the sleeper's body so that they didn't have to sleep lying on their back, which was the position of the dead. It is also a popular bedding item for its aesthetic appeal and the possibility it offers of enhancing pillows or decorative cushions on the bed. As such, it is highly prized by major hotels.

What's the difference between down and synthetic fillings?

There are two main types of filling for bedding accessories: natural, made from duck feathers and down, and synthetic, with fibre or microfibre. Dumas Paris duvet and duck feather bolsters have thermoregulating properties, keeping the head at the right temperature and limiting night-time sweating. This filling inflates with air, providing a soft, airy welcome. Dumas Paris natural duvet bolsters are made from 70% duck down and have impeccable loft. Duck feather is not used in the filling as it is too uncomfortable. When filled with microfibre, Dumas Paris synthetic bolsters offer a more energetic comfort, closer to a firm bolster, with a softer resistance and a more elastic welcome than natural filling. They are also more hypo-allergenic. All are wrapped in a white cotton satin cover.

How to use a top-of-the-range bolster ?

The bolster has two main functions, the first being to raise the pillow when it is too flat. This is the case for people who like their pillows high and for those of a stronger build. The other possible use is to replace the pillow, allowing you to sleep on your back or side depending on your sleeping habits. The bolster can also be used more therapeutically, to support the back or knees, either lying down or sitting up. This can help relieve discomfort or pain in the back or legs. By placing the bolster at the feet of the sleeper, blood circulation can also be improved.

How do you choose the right size for your top-of-the-range bolster?

The size of the bolster will depend mainly on how you feel and your sleeping habits, although traditionally, its width is equal to that of the mattress. So, for a 140 centimetre wide mattress, the natural choice would be a 140 bolster. A King Size bed will accommodate a 160 or 180 bolster. If a couple has different sensibilities and comfort needs, they should choose two 90cm bolsters, i.e. for 1 person. If you have any doubts or questions, our team will be happy to help.

How do I wash a top-of-the-range bolster?

As with any item of bedding, it's essential to wash a bolster properly and maintain it regularly to ensure that it remains comfortable and lasts as long as possible. Our craftsmen recommend patting your bolster daily, preferably in the morning after getting up. This helps to restore the filling's plumpness and shape after each night spent absorbing the weight of your head. To minimise the presence of dust mites, thermal shocks are preferable. You can expose your bolsters to the summer sun, or open your bedroom window every day in winter, to air out the bolster in the low winter temperatures. We also recommend washing a bolster at least once a year. Wash in a large washing machine at 40°C maximum. Drying must be done in a tumble dryer on a gentle cycle, repeated until all traces of moisture have disappeared. It is important to keep your bolster protected from night sweats and dampness, using a protective cover and pillowcase.
