All year round, the human body seeks thermal balance during the various sleep phases. A temperature that is too high, or variations in heat levels during the night, can disrupt the different sleep cycles, forcing the body to react by producing or releasing heat. To maintain a restful, rejuvenating sleep, we recommend you opt for a summer duvet. Thanks to a carefully chosen filling with a grammage optimised for summer, it will regulate the excess body heat emitted while insulating the sleeper from the cool of the night.

How do you choose the best summer duvet for your needs?

Maison Dumas offers its lightweight summer duvets in different collections, with variations in filling designed for the summer months. As well as choosing the right filling, choosing the right size for your bed and mattress means choosing the right summer duvet.

Choosing the right duvet size

When choosing a lightweight summer duvet, the first thing to consider is its size. It's best if the duvet covers the bed with an overhang of around 40 to 50 cm on each side, to cover the base and mattress properly, depending on the height of the mattress. A King Size bed (180x200 cm) with a standard mattress requires a duvet measuring 260x240 cm. However, if the mattress is particularly thick, it may be wise to opt for a made-to-measure duvet measuring 280x260 cm for optimum comfort. For a Queen Size bed (160x200 cm), we recommend choosing a 240x220 cm summer duvet, unless your mattress is thick, in which case a 260x240 cm size would be more suitable. For single beds, we recommend a 140x200cm summer duvet.

The Royal 70% and Sticky duck down duvets, as well as the Impérial and Moldavie goose down duvets, offer variations of material with the constant feature of being very light and breathable. The Alliance synthetic summer duvet is lightly filled with microfibre, to benefit from the hypo-allergenic and supple properties of this fine polyester filling, even in hot weather. You can also opt for a 4-season duvet, which is made up of a summer duvet and a temperate mid-season duvet which, knotted together, form a warm winter duvet.

How do you properly care for your summer duvet to preserve its quality?

Here are some recommendations from the craftsmen at Maison Dumas for looking after your summer duvet and prolonging its life, which averages 8 to 10 years. To avoid sagging and deterioration of the filling, your duvet should be shaken daily to restore its volume. Thermal shock is an effective way of preventing the proliferation of dust mites by exposing your duvet to cold winter temperatures and summer heat every day. When you machine wash your duvet, make sure you do so at 40°C in a machine with a large drum. Then make sure you tumble dry it on a gentle setting repeatedly until it's completely dry, which will help to plump up the filling thanks to the tumbler's spin cycles. Washing is all the more important as summer temperatures increase perspiration.
