Choosing your duvet
How do you choose your duvet?
Choosing your duvet requires thought and analysis of the way you sleep. To help you choose your ideal duvet, you can use the personalised Ideal Night® tool, which will recommend your ideal duvet based on your sleeping habits and environment.
The way we sleep and our sleeping habits have changed considerably over the last four decades. It used to be the French tradition to sleep under woollen blankets with an old-fashioned quilt or eiderdown for extra warmth. The so-called "Nordic" duvet is becoming more and more popular.
Which filling for your duvet?
We make two main families of duvets: natural duvets and synthetic duvets. The choice of duvet is based on family tradition, fear of allergies or practicality and maintenance. It's important to remember, however, that the comfort provided by each filling is very different.
Finding the right filling is therefore an important part of choosing a duvet.
Natural duvet
Natural duvets have the ability to adapt to sleep cycles. For duvets filled with feathers and down, the higher the percentage of down, the warmer and lighter they will be. During deep sleep, the body temperature tends to drop slightly, so a duvet filled with feathers and down will provide more warmth during this period. When the body temperature rises during dreams, the natural duvet, with its check quilting and thermal bridges, will help to regulate and adapt the heat supply.
Synthetic duvet
Synthetic duvets have a reputation for being hypoallergenic and are therefore preferred by some users. However, it is important to know that synthetic duvets have the property of heating constantly, so they will not adapt to sleep cycles. The square quilting for the synthetic duvet is even more important than for the natural duvet, as it is the only way for this duvet to evacuate the excess heat generated by the body during the night. The filling weight of a synthetic duvet will determine its level of warmth; the higher the filling weight, the warmer the duvet will be.
What's the temperature in your bedroom?
Bedroom temperature is an important factor to consider when choosing a duvet. If you want to get a good night's sleep, it's advisable not to heat your bedroom, or to heat it only slightly. If the ambient temperature is above 20°C, you shouldn't choose a duvet that's too warm.
What is your profile when choosing your duvet?
We have identified three broad categories of people: those who are always cold, those who are neither too cold nor too hot, and those who are always hot. Depending on your temperature sensitivity and the temperature of your bedroom, Dumas Paris recommends a comfortable duvet.
How comfortable do you want it to be?
We have defined 4 comfort levels that provide different levels of warmth:
- The winter duvet is ideal for people who are cold or for rooms with little or no heating, where the temperature is between 16 and 18°C.
- Temperate duvets are made for the shoulder seasons, for people who are neither too hot nor too cold, or for more urban habitats where the temperature is between 18 and 20°C.
- Summer duvets are suitable for the summer season, but also for the hottest parts of the world or for bedroom temperatures of over 20°C.
- The 4 seasons 2 in 1 duvet, whether filled with down or microfibre, is suitable for all seasons of the year.
What size bed do you have?
The size of the duvet makes a major contribution to the comfort it provides, and should be adapted to your sleeping habits. The size of duvet should be adapted to the size of your mattress and the height of your base. You'll need to leave enough space on either side of the bed for you to feel comfortable and to be able to tuck the duvet in or not.
If you already have duvet covers, it's important to check their dimensions before you buy. The size of your cover should perfectly match the size of your duvet.
